ENRRA Hosts Workshop on Nuclear Power Plant Protective Strategy in Cooperation with the IAEA

From August 18 to 20, 2026, the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRRA) hosted the Workshop on Nuclear Power Plant Protective Strategy in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as part of efforts to support and enhance national capabilities in the field of nuclear security, in line with relevant international standards and practices. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Mahmoud Gad, Vice Chairman of ENRRA, who conveyed the greetings and appreciation of Dr. Hany Khedr, Chairman of ENRRA, to the IAEA, in recognition of the Agency’s continued technical support and assistance to the Arab Republic of Egypt across various areas of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, particularly in the fields of nuclear safety and security. Dr. Mahmoud Gad emphasized the importance of the workshop in enhancing an integrated national understanding of the requirements of physical protection strategies for nuclear facilities, and in exchanging expertise and international good practices, thereby supporting national efforts to ensure the highest levels of security and protection for nuclear facilities and activities. The workshop brought together a distinguished group of experts and specialists from the International Atomic Energy Agency, along with representatives of relevant national entities, agencies, and organizations involved in the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant Project, highlighting the importance of coordination and integration among national stakeholders. As part of the practical component of the workshop, and on the sidelines of its activities, a delegation from ENRRA and the IAEA, accompanied by Dr. Mahmoud Gad, Vice Chairman of ENRRA, conducted a field visit to the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant Project on Sunday, August 16, 2026. The delegation was received by Eng. Mohamed Ramadan, Vice Chairman for Operation and Maintenance at the Nuclear Power Plants Authority, accompanied by a number of Authority leaders. He conveyed the greetings and welcome of Dr. Sherif Helmy, Chairman of the Nuclear Power Plants Authority. The visit included an introductory presentation on the importance of nuclear energy in Egypt’s energy future and the implementation of the El Dabaa project, followed by discussions on technical and environmental aspects and measures ensuring compliance with nuclear safety and security requirements. The delegation also toured the construction site of the four nuclear units and the El Dabaa Specialized Port, observing the progress of construction works and the technologies used throughout the project. The workshop and field visit reaffirm ENRRA’s commitment to strengthening national capabilities, enhancing coordination and knowledge exchange, and supporting Egypt’s regulatory mandate in accordance with the highest international standards.
