At the Forum on the Prospects of Electricity Generation and Desalination of Sea Water by Nuclear Energy, the Chairman of the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority Presents its regulatory role in Egypt.
Shaaban gave a detailed presentation on the regulatory role of the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority in the Arab Republic of Egypt. H.E started the presentation by talking about the national legislative framework regulating the role of the Authority, especially Law No. 7 of 2010, according to which an independent regulatory body was established to undertake all regulatory tasks related to nuclear and radiological activities to benefit from the peaceful uses of atomic Energy.
Accordingly, a clear vision was drafted for the authority, to be a distinguished regulatory authority at the national, regional and international levels, in the areas of nuclear and radiological safety, nuclear security, and nuclear safeguards to take advantage of the peaceful uses of atomic energy, in a way that guarantees the safety and security of people, property and the environment from the dangers of exposure to ionizing radiation.
In order to achieve this mission, an effective organizational structure has been put in place that enables the authority to perform its tasks effectively. The uses of atomic energy for peaceful purposes in Egypt are more than 60 years old, and there are approximately 4,000 installations and radiation sources used for peaceful purposes in medical, industrial, petroleum and other facilities, which are subject to strict supervision by the ENRRA.
At the end of his speech, H.E indicated that ENRRA gives utmost importance to human capital and provide them with specialized trainings to build the necessary skills in accordance with the best international practices. A Nuclear Security Support Center has been established within the Authority, in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, which provides technical support and training programs in the field of nuclear security support at the national, regional and international levels, and represents an effective mechanism for providing technical support to Arab and African countries in cooperation with IAEA experts.
